watergate in the mix

Watergate, a very famous techno club in Berlin, is going to start a mix series similar to what fabric has with their fabric and fabriclive mix cd's put out monthly by their residents (for more on fabric check out this post). Watergate is another one of those clubs that I've always heard about, but never been, and although I've never been there, I would have to say that with their decor and the DJ's they get to play there, it is a club I am almost guaranteed to love. I've seen pictures of it posted on M.A.N.D.Y.'s myspace page (that picture on the left) and in Modeselektor's "Black Box" video, and although I had no idea where it was, I fell in love with the lights that run along the top of the club and tight atmosphere (it's also pretty cool how the DJ booth is audience level and so close to all the clubbers, plus, it's actually on the water...) and had to find out what club that was. It was also recently named the 10th best club in the world in DJ Magazine. They got Onur Ozer to mix the first installment of their mix series, and although I've never heard of him, I am defiantly looking forward to some sweet shit, the same way I'll listen to a fabriclive mix even if I have never heard of the DJ.

Modeselektor - Black Box (the 2nd half of the video takes place in Watergate)

memorial day weekend 2008

My new thing is putting records over my face. That's about it. No actual DJing went on this weekend, but I goofed of with some 80's styled tracks on the CDJs (which I haven't touched since December) and listened to the mix Ed Banger did for Mixmag, which you can download here.

Examples of some sweet 80's style electro:
The Freestylers- Drop the Bomb <--mp3
Afrika Bambaataa & the Soul Sonic Force- Planet Rock (Kraftwerk remix) <--mp3

one of the most loaded days in detroit history

This Saturday, May 23, might be one of the coolest days in Detroit history, especially for me.

1. The Detroit Tigers host the Minnesota Twins.
2. The Detroit Pistons host the Boston Celtics in game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
3. The Detroit Red Wings are playing the Pittsburgh Penguins in game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
4. Day 2 of the MOVEMENT: Detroit Electronic Music Festival, one of the best techno festivals in the world, in the city that invented techno. Sets include Peanut Butter Wolf, Deadmau5, Alex Smoke, Moby, and Pete Rock.
Awesome, if your lucky enough to be in Detroit, do something cool today. I might go to day 3 of MOVEMENT festival, as I'm heading back to Portage for the first time this weekend, and need something cool to do with my friends.

cut copy- hearts on fire

Again, just like in the case of Chromeo's "Fancy Footwork," here is the second example I have of thinking a song's video had been released only to find it replaced by an official (and worse) video, this time for Cut Copy's "Hearts on Fire." I would say that this is easily my favorite Cut Copy song of all time, and just a classic example of romantic lyrics and banging 80's music. Another thing they changed was the the song was original released as a single back in 2007, and then came out again on Cut Copy's recent full length "In Ghost Colours," but the two versions of the songs are different. I personally prefer the original single only release much more, and unofficial video some kid made is better as well (youtube says that it was the winning entry in a Nokia NSeries contest). In fact, the official video is fucking terrible. Between the storyline, and the acting, and the rain effects, I really have no idea why they didn't just use the contest video.

daft punk : pyramid :: m-nus : cube

M-nus records are throwing parties that revolve around a glowing cube, and well, you can find out more about it at their website.

Contakt.

Aliens or something made it, and for €30, you can party with it. Cause you know, it's totally real, and the only people who can understand it are people who listen to minimal.

a picture's worth a thousand words...

...but a Allen & Heath Xone:4D is worth $3000. My dream mixer was always the Xone:3D, but this is 1D better. Plus, Allen & Heath provide the mixers for my favorite club ever, fabric (I wrote about it being the #1 club in the world here).

Some info:
  • Totally new USB2 soundcard
  • 24bit/96kHz capability
  • Drivers available for both PC and Mac
  • 4 stereo outputs plus digital out
  • 4 stereo inputs plus digital in
  • 8 extra soundcard configuration switches remove the need for the desktop configuration utility of the :3D
  • Ability to switch FX2 RCA sockets to be recording outputs
  • Unique real-time LFO waveform edit function
  • Dual layer control surface with control snapshot allows 225 mappable MIDI controls across the two layers.
  • Updated mixer circuitry
  • Improved BPM detection system
  • Heavy duty chassis and front panel

digitalism + justice = beyond the rave?

Somehow, someway, they decided to put Justice, Digitalism, Teenage Bad Girl, and UNKLE on the soundtrack for this movie. This movie:

And assuming you already own all the original versions of the songs they have in the movie, here are some excellent remixes:

    chromeo- fancy footwork

My favorite song of Chromeo's album was easily Fancy Footwork, and they've finally released the video for it. Only thing is, I thought they already did. For the first time in my life, I can say that I enjoy the unofficial music video much more than the official video.

    Official Video:

    Unofficial Video:

And some remixes of the song that I like:
Chromeo- Fancy Footwork (Surkin rouge teens remix) <--full song
Chromeo- Fancy Footwork (Thomas Barford remix) <--full song

Both remixes are pretty old. I remember the Thomas Barford remix was track 2 on my "Same Shit, Different DJ vol. 2" that I mixed last August, but its still a good song.

I have a ton more videos of other DJs and bands I saw, I'll post those later.

    Thursday, May 1, 2008

never meet your idols? fuck that!

So it's the first day of Coachella, and my tentmate Sean and I head in kind of early to "look at the art" because Sean thinks that kind of thing is awesome. Around noon we head over to the Sahara tent to check out DJ Medhi's set to kick-off Coachella, and guess who I run into?

Fucking Justice and Kavinsky. Justice closed out the festival with a headlining set (a video of it is availible here, and I'll upload more tomorrow), and Kavinsky played during the day on Saturday. Very cool guys. They hung out for about a half an hour during Mehdi's set, and Busy P, SebastiAn, and So-Me were all there as well, although Busy P and SebastiAn disappeared so I couldn't get pics with them.

Here is Kavinsky's song "Wayfarer" and if you look closely at the pics, Kavinsky, Gaspard Augé of Justice, and I are all wearing the same sunglasses: Rayban Wayfarers. What can I say? Great DJs think alike...

    Kavinsky- Wayfarer <--full song

And if you were wonder what else me and Kavinsky both had in common...

And a Justice remix of a Fatboy Slim song, who also played Coachella.
